How to successfully secure a work experience placement – Part One
Competition for work experience placements at Core has always been fierce, but over recent months we’ve noticed a massive increase in the number of CVs we receive from those interested in spending a couple of weeks getting to grips with the world of marketing, PR and design.
So how do you give yourself the best possible chance of securing a placement? Well, it’s all in the quality of your approach – a short introductory email/ letter and your CV are all you have to catch our attention. To make life a little easier for you, we thought we’d give you a heads-up on exactly what does it for us.
1. First Impressions Count
Now, I know work experience is a fact of life for many students and graduates, but emails worded “I have to find a work experience placement for June 2010 and was wondering if you have any vacancies” just don’t convince us that you actually want to spend any period of time at Core!
In a few short sentences, if you can convey why you want to come to Core, what you’re hoping to get of your time here and what you can bring to the party, then you’re off to a very good start; and don’t forget to make it clear which area of the business you’re most interested in.
Oh, and try to personalise your email or letter, which brings me to my next point…
2. Do Your Homework
Spend five minutes on our website and you’ll get a feel for the type of agency Core is, from our client portfolio to our love of purple and even our favourite children’s books.
Armed with this knowledge, you can firstly make a decision on whether we’re the right agency for you, and you can then personalise your email or letter so it shows you have some understanding of the culture of the company and the work we do.
Why go to such lengths? It proves to us that you’ve thought your placement through, and means you have a better chance of actually getting something out of your time with us.
