How to successfully secure a work experience placement – Part Two
We’re sure you’ve been waiting for it, here’s the second instalment of our tips on how to secure the right work placement for you.
3. Stand Out
As we’re constantly filtering though work experience requests, it’s possible we may have missed some gems, so make sure your request stands out and doesn’t end up in the ‘trash’ folder. This is not as difficult as it may seem – take on board the points above and you’re halfway there. Make us laugh, impress us in someway, or even slip in some gratuitous flattery and you’ve cracked it!
4. And Finally…
We approach our work experience placements in quite a formal way as we want to be upfront with you about what you can expect. So if we like what we see when we read your introductory letter/ email and CV we’ll invite you to an interview so we can get to know you better and more importantly – you can get to know us. In the interview, we’ll give you a job description and talk you through the tasks you might be involved in.
This not only means arriving in the office on your first day is less daunting, but it helps you to be realistic about what you’ll be spending your time doing, and we’ll always admit that sometimes you might need to occupy yourself with online and newspaper research!
There might be downtime between the jobs you are given, but the team will encourage you to use this time to get up to speed on the newspapers, trade magazines and blogs we all read regularly; observe and listen to what’s going on around you; ask questions, and above all – be positive and proactive so you can make the most of your time with us.
